Authenticity has been defined as something that is honest, genuine or original. Yet, we argue that perceptions of authenticity are shaped by social and cultural values, making this traditional definition too limiting. Through our exhibition we therefore aim to expand the meaning of authenticity, to move beyond the dichotomous labels of real versus fake. So as you experience the exhibit, we invite you to ask yourself: What IS real?

Authenticity has been defined as something that is honest, genuine or original. Yet, we argue that perceptions of authenticity are shaped by social and cultural values, making this traditional definition too limiting. Through our exhibition we therefore aim to expand the meaning of authenticity, to move beyond the dichotomous labels of real versus fake.

Our holistic approach to the issue is grounded in human ecological and material culture theory, which considers people's relationships to objects within their environment. So as you experience the exhibit, we invite you to ask yourself:
