What IS real?

Authenticity has been defined as something that is honest, genuine or original. Yet, we argue that perceptions of authenticity are shaped by social and cultural values, making this traditional definition too limiting. Through our exhibition we therefore aim to expand the meaning of authenticity, to move beyond the dichotomous labels of real versus fake. So as you experience the exhibit, we invite you to ask yourself: What IS real?

March 9th, 2010: Announcements

Today we needed to distinguish what would be going on the blog as compared to the log book. We will be posting our documentation team progress as well as any other important events that occur along the way.
We announced the Twitter, Facebook and Blog to the class, as well as wrote the web addresses on the whiteboard.
Our team created photo release form and got the class to sign them. Pretty much everyone agreed that they didn't care if their picture was online, but they did not want their name involved. So no tagging will be done on Facebook. The class also signed a release form from the department.

March 4th, 2010: Who Will We Represent?

Today our group decided that we were going try talking to Nait and Grant Mac. Ashley and Cara decided that they would handle that aspect. They are going to e-mail and see what they hear back. Cross your fingers!
We made a few tweaks to our Twitter page today. Also tweeted about some of the things that were going on in class.
We officially published the Facebook group today as well. "The Great Pretenders: Questioning the Meaning of Authenticity Exhibit". Go check it out! We added info and created a few discussion topics. Now we just need to get everyone to join!
As the documentation committee, we decided it would be easier for all of us if one person was assigned to represent each other committee. Here is what we came up with:
  • Ashley: Artifacts and Research and Text
  • Cara: Promotions
  • Hayley: Graphic Design
  • Kelsey: Spatial Design
  • Rebecca: Props
We also split up duties in our own committee:
  • Kelsey: Blog
  • Hayley and Rebecca: Photography
  • Ashley and Cara: Documentary (Video)
And then all of us will update the Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Our holistic approach to the issue is grounded in human ecological and material culture theory, which considers people's relationships to objects within their environment. So as you experience the exhibit, we invite you to ask yourself:
What IS real?
